By Joe Waite, WBCA

Both lead teams to State Titles

For the first time in the history of the WBCA, the Association named Co-Head coaches for their work in 2023.

In four seasons, Matt Vold has put Saint Croix Falls on the baseball map. His record in four years is 86-16, with three Heart ‘O North Conference Championships. In 2022 Saint Croix Falls were Division 3 State Runners-Up. In 2023 the Saints went 28-3, and brought home their first State Championship, defeating La Crosse Aquinas 3-1 in the title game. Vold’s endless work and passion for baseball not only create wins, but more importantly he has changed young men’s lives. He works to promote leaders and create a strong baseball culture.

Danny Clary led Ithaca High School to their second State Championship. Along the way the Bulldogs defeated three #1 seeds, including state ranked #1 Eleva-Strum and #2 ranked Pecatonica. Both of Ithaca’s State Tournament victories were comeback victories, including a thrilling 7th inning victory in the Championship Game.  Coach Clary’s team demonstrated a tremendous mindset, with a never quit attitude, and they never wavered in their approach. This reflected his leadership and guidance. Ithaca also won the WIAA Sportsmanship Award.
