North rallies for a run in the 7th for the win, Eagan named MVP

EAST 4 vs NORTH 5, WBCA All Star Classic Game Six

Hortonville’s Ryley Rosenfeldt took the hill for the North in the final game of the 30th Annual WBCA Classic.  He was greeted rudely by Oak Creek’s Hayden Krimmer who laced a single to left on his first pitch.  Racine Horlick’s Michael Aiello hit a hard grounder to second that was turned into a fielder’s choice, with Krimmer getting pinched at second.  Brookfield East’s Nick Kanavas popped out to second for the second out.  Racine Saint Catherine’s Eric Weisbrod grounded out to Kimberly’s Matt Meulemans at second, who got all of the innings defensive action and got three defensive assists.

Appleton North’s Clark Eagan led off for the North against Kenosha Tremper’s Kyle Kutzler.  Eagan, who had a monster game in the Classic Opener, finally made an out by grounding out to Krimmer at second.  Winnebago Lutheran’s Maustin Otterstatter got hit in the hip to reach first.  Oshkosh West’s Damian Guenther hit the first pitch he saw to Kanavas at short, who turned a double play with Krimmer at second.

West Allis Hale’s Nick Sotiros laced a single to left to start the inning.  Menomonee Falls’ Brett Krause popped out to Otterstatter at first base for the first inning.  With Franklin’s Tyler Gentz batting, Sotiros took second on a 55 foot curveball from Rosenfeldt. Gentz ended up walking anyway, putting runners on first and second.  USM’s Billy Lawton ripped a towering 390 foot drive to centerfield that was run down by Eagan who made a beautiful over the shoulder catch on the warning track. Rosenfeldt stranded both runners when he got Racine Case’s Zach Brenner to ground out to second.

Appleton East’s Taran Tierney grounded out hard to short to start the inning.  Winnebago Lutheran’s Kevin Seibel dribbled out weakly to the pitcher.  Clintonville’s Kolin Kubitz grounded to Krause at third, who made a nice play to throw him out.

Krimmer struck out looking to start the bottom of the third. Aiello grounded out to

second and Kanavas grounded out to short for a very quick half inning.

Meulemans led off the bottom of the frame with a two hop double off the fence in the left field corner.  Coleman’s Derek Marquardt drove him in with a hard single up the middle.  He moved to second when Rosenfeldt drew a walk.  Back to the top of the order, Eagan smashed a grounder to second where Krimmer flipped to Kanavas at second for the force out, but Kanavas threw wildly, allowing Eagan to reach and take second on the overthrow.  Marquardt scored on the play.  Otterstatter flared a bloop single down the right field line that dropped untouched, with Eagan going to third.  Guenther then hit sharply to Lawton at first who got the force out at second, but Kanavas was unable to get the throw back to Lawton in time for the double play.  Eagan scored. Tierny popped out to shortstop to end the inning.

Weisbrod flew hard to left on the first pitch for the first out.  Sotiros lifted a lazy fly ball to right for the second out. Krause provided a little two out thunder for the East when he tripled to the wall in right. Rosenfeldt escaped when Gentz flew out to deep right.

Seibel grounded out to second on the first pitch he saw for the first out.  Kubitz then laced a hard single to left.  Meulmans singled hard to center, with Kubitz taking third on the play.  Marquardt followed out to Lawton at first for the second out.  Rosenfeldt lined a single up the middle that Kanavas just missed on a diving attempt.  Eagan then drew a walk to load the bases. Kutzler escaped by getting Otterstatter to pop out to second.

The North sent out Gibraltar’s Matt Hecht to pitch the remainder of the game.  The first to face him was Kenosha Bradford’s Kevin Tibor, who drew a walk. Watertown’s Carson got his fifth hit of the Tournament in six at bats when he singled up the middle.  Tibor had to hold at second as Mergener knocked the ball down to keep the ball in the infield.  Menomonee Falls’ Cole Hernikl hit a slow roller to Little Chute’s Mitch Ciske at short, who bobbled and allowed all hands to reach safely.  Catholic Memorial’s Justin Dentici laced a two run scoring double that one hopped the left field fence, with Hernikl holding at third, Dentici at second, and still nobody out.  Union Grove’s Adam Filz struck out swinging for the first out.  Weisbrod flied out to deep right, easily scoring Hernikl from third. Kenosha Bradford’s Tony DeBartolo struck out swinging, stranding a runner on third and leaving the East still trailing by one.

Weber took the mound for the East and got off to a good start by getting VanStippen to fly out to short centerfield.  Wrightstown’s Alex Nockerts struck out swinging and Ciske flew out center for the third out.

Meulemans took the hill for the North, trying to preserve the one run lead.  Tosa East’s Ben Carpenter hit the first pitch he saw to third baseman Nockerts, who threw him out.  Gentz laced a single to right, putting the tying run on first.  Meulemans got Tibor out swinging on a tight, high fastball and Weber grounded out slowly to second to keep the North ahead.

Disch singled to left to start the bottom of the sixth.  He went to second when Mergener grounded out.  Disch took third when Rosholt’s Heinrich Walder grounded out to short.  Hecht flew out to deep to center to end the inning.

Marquardt came in for the North trying to get the save.  Hernikl got the rally started by drawing a 3-1 walk and took second on a stolen base. Dentici got rung up on a low fastball for the first out with Hernikl still in scoring position. With Filz batting, Hernikl stole third, with Disch’s throw skipping by Nockerts at third.  Henrikl scored, tying the game, on the error. Filz drew a walk, representing the go ahead run.  Filz took second on a wild pitch, with Weisbrod batting.  Weisbrod made the second out by flying out to center.  DeBartolo struck out, leaving the score tied.

The North had the top of the order coming up, with Clark Eagan, who is headed to Arkansas to play for the Razorbacks, trying to get on to start the rally and win the game.  Eagan didn’t get a pitch to hit, but did reach first on a walk, representing the winning run.  Dvorachek fouled a bunt attempt off, and then took a ball high.  He missed his second bunt attempt.  It didn’t matter as Eagan took second when Weber threw to first but beat the throw to second.  Dvorachek struck out swinging for the first out.  Eagan stole third, as the ball skipped by Dentici.  It looked like he was going to try and score by Eagan slipped and fell rounding third.    VanStippen came through the North, lacing a hard single to left, scoring Eagan with the winning run.

For his efforts, Eagan was awarded the Tom Nygaard MVP trophy. Eagan, who had a three run homer in Game 1, made several tremendous running catches, and  scored the winning run in Game 6.  Congratulations to Clark Eagan.
