WBCA ALL-STAR CLASSIC: GAME 1

South All Stars score five times in the 6th to beat the North All Stars 7-4.

The Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association’s 30th Annual All-Star Classic started Friday, June 28th, at EJ Schneider Field in Oshkosh.  The North All-Stars and South All-Stars started the action under sunny skies but with rain bearing down from north of the Fox Valley.

The South sent Sun Prairie’s Brett Yoder to the mound to start Game 1. Yoder was 7-0 with an ERA of 1.69 Cardinals, who won the last two consecutive Division I State Championships.   He was greeted rudely by the North’s leadoff hitter, Clark Eagan of Appleton North, who singled hard to RF and then stole second base.  Winnebago Lutheran’s Kevin Seibel followed with a hard single to LF, advancing Eagan to third.  Kettle Moraine Lutheran’s Nate Krause hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Eagan.  Yoder struck out Appleton East’s Taran Tierney for the second out of the inning.  Oshkosh West’s Damian Guenther hit a shot toward right field, but it hit Krause, running from first base,  in the foot, ending the inning.

The North countered with Winnebago Lutheran’s Maustin Otterstatter.  Otterstatter was 7-1 for WLA this past season. Otterstatter got Evansville’s Evan Deegan to line out weakly to second base to start the inning, struck out Milton’s Adam Catacutan, and got Sun Prairie’s Zach Fairchild to fly out to left for a 1-2-3 inning.

In the 2nd, Yoder got the first two outs before Otterstatter reached on an error by RF Alex Brown.  Coleman’s Mason Mergener followed that up with a hard base hit to left.  Fairchild shot a throw down to second base  that got Otterstatter caught in no man’s land.  However, Otterstatter was able to deek the tag and get back safely. That would be fateful.  On the very next pitch, Eagan hit a rope over the left field fence driving in three. Yoder got Seibel to hit weakly back to himself to end the inning.

Otterstatter got Waunakee’s Willie Freimuth to ground out to third, but Brown singled by flaring to right field.  He struck out River Valley’s Alex Spurley for the second out and got Madison Edgewood’s Paul Mutch to ground out to avoid any damage.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran’s Nate Krause led off the top of the third with an infield single.  Tierney struck out on a high fastball for the first out.  Guenther hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out and then struck out Marquardt on a nasty curve ball to end the inning.

Mount Horeb’s Kale Pustina led off the third by flying out weakly to first.  Otterstatter made a nice play on a bunt by Yoder for the second out and Deegan grounded out to first to end the inning.

Yoder struck out Appleton East’s Ryne VanStippen to start the fourth, got Otterstatter to fly out to centerfield, and Mergener to foul out to first to end the inning.

Otterstatter struck out Catacutan on a pitch in the dirt but it got away from catcher Nate Krause and allowed Catacutan to reach first on the wild pitch, starting a potential rally for the South, but that all fell apart when Otterstatter snared a hard ground ball off the bat of Fairchild, spun and threw to second, with fellow WLA teammate Kevin Seibel turning the double play.  Otterstatter left the game with only one hit allowed.

Parkview’s Jameson Lavery took the mound for the South to start the fifth and struck out Appleton West’s Nathan Disch for the first out.  Waupun’s Jordan Daane made a nice defensive play at third, throwing out Wisconsin Dell’s Colyn Buss for the second out.  Lavery struck out Clintonville’s Kolin Kubitz for the third out.

Rosholt’s Heinrich Walder took the mound for the North in the fifth. Green Lake-Princeton’s Noah Polcyn reached second on an error by CF Ryley Rosenfeldt.  He reached third when Lodi’s Donnie Manke grounded out to second.  Polcyn had to stay at third when Daane checked swing a weak ball back to the pitcher for the second out. Columbus’ Taylor Jansen laced a double down the left field line, knocking in the South’s first run.  Lavery, the pitcher, reached on an error by the shortstop, Little Chute’s Mitch Ciske, allowing Jansen to score.  Waupun’s Colin DeBoer singled hard to CF and both runners advanced a base when the ball was bobbled by Rosenfeldt.  Reedsburg’s Seth Douglas got hit in the bill of the helmet, loading the bases. Walder got Fennimore’s Ian Stretter to pop out to short to end the damage and leave them loaded as light rain started to fall.

Lavery got his third, fourth, and fifth strikeouts of the game when he struck out Reedsville’s Brett Dvorachek, Wrightstown’s Alex Nockerts, and Gibraltar’s Matt Hecht.

Colyn Buss led off for the South in the bottom of the sixth with a single between first and second base.  Polcyn lined hard to right but was robbed when Hecht made a diving catch on the sinking liner. Manke drew the games first walk putting runners on first and second with one out.  Daane hit a bomb to centerfield but it was ran down by Hortonville’s Ryley Rosenfeldt.  Both runners tagged and moved up putting the tying runs in scoring position with two outs. Jansen got his second hit in as many as bats, knocking in two runs with a bloop single to centerfield.  Lavery doubled hard to right, moving Jansen to third.  DeBoer smashed a liner up the middle that nailed Walder in the shoulder. Walder was unable to make a play as Jansen scored, Lavery moved to third and DeBoer reaching first, giving the South the lead. With Douglas up, DeBoer stole second. Douglas hit a smash down the left field line for a double, driving in two more runs.  Streeter grounded hard to short with Ciske making a great play to throw him out.  Still, the damage had been done as the South got five runs on five hits.

The North needed three to tie the game coming into the top of the 7th. Rosenfeldt led the inning off with a hard double to left.  Walder grounded out to Lavery for the first out, with Rosenfeldt reaching third base.  Kimberly’s Matt Meulemans flied out to short right field for the second out. Disch drew a walk, but Lavery got Ciske to fly out to right field to end the game and get the pitching victory.
